Additional information

Hi good morning. How can I work as a tax man in the HMRC. Could a person be trained up without a 2:2 degree? Thank you for your time. Mr Williams.

Good morning, Mr Williams.

My initial thought was, I am an ordinary person and work for HMRC! lol.

HMRC offers a range of roles, from administrative positions to specialist tax roles. For many Tax Professional Development Programme (TPDP) roles, a 2:2 degree (or equivalent) is typically required because these are graduate-level positions. You have already highlighted this entry point in your question.

However, HMRC also recruits for non-graduate roles, such as Tax Officer or Compliance Officer positions (These often require GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, and strong analytical skills). That's the route I took, although I work in a project and HR type role these days.

Training Opportunities

  • HMRC provides structured training programmes for new recruits, including apprenticeships.
  • Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn, and they do not require a degree.
  • You’ll receive on-the-job training and may work towards professional qualifications over time.

Alternative Routes

If you don’t have a 2:2 degree, consider HMRC Apprenticeships (Level 3 or Level 4) or Internal progression: Start in an entry-level role and work your way up. HMRC values skills such as problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication—so relevant experience can help.
