My best piece of advice is to get involved, speak out and make yourself known for all the right reasons! Ask as many questions as possible - there is no stupid question. If you don't ask - you don't get. I am also a firm believer of bringing your whole self to work, let your personality shine and be yourself.

What do you like about your job and the company?

As we are a growing team, there is so much to get stuck into and so much scope to grow our employer brand! This makes it a really exciting role, as I will be able to see first hand how the work we are doing is contributing to our overall objectives.

Greatest achievements

In one of my first marketing roles at John Lewis Liverpool, I was given an opportunity by Liverpool ONE to be on the judging panel to help judge the best dressed at Ladies Day, Aintree. This is a far cry from #LifeAtHMRC, however it provided me with so many amazing opportunities, including speaking on the radio, TV and in front of an entire room of racing journalists. It was amazing to represent the brand I was working for and something I was so proud to be involved in on behalf of my city! I have a real passion for fashion and retail, so it was a job I thoroughly enjoyed.

No matter what job I've done over the years there has always been people impacted by it. Whether I was sorting out a customers Tax, National Insurance record, developing new IT systems, or delivering new policies or even opening new buildings its people that have been affected at the end of it. Its easy to forget when wrapped up in the day to day activities of your job, that I have made life better for a huge amount of people over the years but in tiny bite size chunks

You need to believe in yourself and take any development opportunity offered to you. Training and learning is important and is encouraged so you can do your job effectively and develop skills that can help you throughout your career. Constant development is important for you, your team and the wider business. If you are interested in pursuing something - consult with your manager to see if they can help identify opportunities or courses you can attend. Not all courses are internal and in some instances the department will pay to attend external courses or attain professional qualifications. There are also great training and development schemes that exist in HMRC

In order to learn, improve and progress this can sometimes inevitably mean rejection somewhere along the way. Instead of letting this dampen your spirit, see it as a learning curve. Build the knowledge or skills you need, then try again. Whether your ambition is to progress right to the top, or be recognised as the best in your role, everyone has different goals and you are your best advocate.
