What do you like about your job and the company?
I spent a year working voluntarily as a Generalist Advisor at the Citizens Advice Bureau and Law Centre, this was extremely rewarding. I was able to apply the knowledge and skills gained from my legal education, I advised clients on issues relating to employment law, debt, immigration law, welfare benefits and housing. I conducted research and then explained my findings and options available to each client. I also created and completed a detailed and accurate case record for each client. The clients I worked with were so appreciative and grateful and it was evident how much the advice meant to them.
Greatest achievements
I had the challenging task of implementing a new rostering system to 24 areas in a 12-month period. The target was to lead a team of 2 resources and deliver training to Ward Leaders on how to utilise the new system whilst supporting Matrons on how to analyse rosters and achieve cost savings for the Trust. I faced significant reluctance from Ward Leaders resisting this change. I remained resilient, enthusiastic, and presented the benefits of the new system honestly, whilst addressing any concerns in a timely manner. I delivered a blend of clear communication methods through one to ones and drop-in training sessions and created guidance packs to further support training. I exceeded expectations and delivered to 32 areas, 8 above target and saved Ward Leaders an average of 13 hours a week in administrative activity. As well as the significant amount of money spent on Agency Workers.

Always remain positive. Take the plunge once in a while and believe in yourself. Learn what you can from others. If there are any opportunities outside of your comfort zone, rise to the challenge and volunteer. You will surprise yourself, who will release the abilities that you didn’t think you had. Remain positive and focused on your goal. Consider the bigger picture, how does my role fit in within the wider goals of the business and how can you make it a great place to work. In a customer led role like mine, you can really make a difference to people’s lives. You see the negative impacts our mistakes can make and how you can work to ensure that they are not repeated, whilst improving the customer journey and the reputation of the business. You will gain positive feedback and people will look up to you.

I have been very lucky in that I have almost always been given a role (or applied for one) that I have enjoyed in HMRC (or earlier departments). If you show that you are keen to learn and willing to listen, then you will find that opportunities will present themselves to you and you will progress in your career. When I was told that I would have to undertake taxes training in 2005, I was horrified. Having been trained in National Insurance and done various management roles, I thought that tax would be just too hard for me and that I wouldn't pass the exams. However, I committed wholeheartedly to the training programme. I studied hard and passed all the exams first time - even though my daughter was still a baby so I was constantly exhausted as well as having to travel to London once a week for 18 months for my tutorials!

If there is one thing in my 20+ years in the civil service I have figured out it is you will never know if you don't try. Early on in my career I would never volunteer for opportunities, I wouldn't offer up answers or contribute to group meetings or working groups and missed the opportunity to apply for roles I would have loved to try my hand at. This was all through the fear of looking stupid or failing and how other people would view me. Not to say I have never failed as I have, be that in job applications or the approach I have taken to work tasks. The biggest thing I will share here is I have learned so much more from failing than I ever have from getting something right first time. The support from my colleagues during these times was surprising, there are so many great people who work across our government departments which fosters a great environment to be part of. Don't forget if you learn or take something way from an experience how can that be seen as a failure. Don't stop trying.
