To be honest, I was looking for a job with job security and a good pension scheme as when Covid hit, my priorities changed. I knew that I wanted to work for the Civil Service as they had both these things. I applied for customer service role and wasn't intending on going into debt management but that is where I was placed, and I am glad I was as being in DM has given me the time and opportunity to work on my career and develop myself.
There are loads of programmes and schemes to develop your career within HMRC and the Civil Service as a whole so I would say that getting your foot in the door, even if it is not your dream job to start, is a good way to start and you may even end up loving where you get placed even if it wasn't your intended role.
